Novel Power: Have you fallen under a book's influence?

There have been few times in my life when I've read a fiction book and it has noticeably influenced my behavior during and after reading it.

I still remember the first time it happened.

Many years ago, a friend recommended I read a book. She'd read it, her sister and mother had read it, and so she felt pretty confident about the novel's power over people. She warned that if I read it too, then I should be prepared: The book had made everyone a little paranoid about their personal security. She said she would crawl into bed at night (she lived alone, as did I at the time), then she'd have to get up and check and re-check her doors and windows.

The book was Patricia Cornwell's Postmortem (Kay Scarpetta Series).

And my friend was right! I did get up to check and double check my locks.

I keep thinking I should re-read that book now that I know more about writing to see how Ms. Cornwell created such an intense connection with her readership.

Hmm... Maybe I should do that this summer.

Has a novel ever influenced you? If so, in what way? What was the book?

Chloe's Matchmaking Terrier: Cover Reveal

I'm excited! Chloe's Matchmaking Terrier, a prequel novella in my Morning Lake series, will be released in the summer 2014! And today I have the cover to share with you! Isn't the terrier the cutest?

Book Cover

She is ready to leave her past behind.

Chloe Wagner, after leaving an unhealthy relationship, moves back to Morning Lake feeling lonely, fifty pounds overweight, and ready to start fresh. So when a friend asks her to foster an Airedale Terrier named Ginger, she seizes the opportunity!

However, she hadn't realized her dog walk route would take her right by Luke Larsen's acreage.

He's never forgotten her.

Luke figures he's been in love with Chloe for most of his life. Even though she is only in town for the summer, he can't resist this opportunity to get to know her all over again. Is a summer fling enough to appease his heart? Or can he show her she's perfect ... and they're perfect for one another through every season?
